What improves learning?
Why do we talk about fluency?
Because this gives 'real' information about:
- How effective learning is: the levels below describe the learning that we are seeing
- What next steps to take
The visual below explains the five stages to fluency:
Why is it so important that students are gaining at least substantial understanding?
Because once a student has gained substantial understanding:
- Students are able to practice independently without teacher support
- Students are able to remember what they have learned if they do regular retrieval practice
What action is appropriate for each level of fluency?
The image below explains what action a student should take based on their level of fluency:
How can students, parents or carers find out more about effective learning and revision?

How can students, parents or carers use Knowledge Organisers to support effective learning and revision?
Knowledge Organisers are exactly that!
They organise knowledge and help students to 'see' what they need to learn and how it fits together.
We have also worked to make our Knowledge Organisers 'quizzable' so they can be used more easily for revision.
We will be providing more information for students and parents on how to use Knowledge Organisers for learning in October 2022.
Look for the Knowledge Organiser button in every subject area:
What other resources might you find useful to support learning and revision?
Many of our subjects provide Student Curriculum Journeys that help students to see the bigger picture of what they will be learning and when.
