Why does independent practice matter?

For any student wishing to gain fluent knowledge(as explained in the visual at the bottom of this page), independent practice is vital:

  • It increases practice time: the more students practice, the more successful they will be ​
  • It is crucial to build students' fluency so that they can operate without teacher support​
  • It puts more time back into the classroom to focus on:​
    1. guided practice from teachers​
    2. face-to-face feedback

We will try to play our part in this by explaining how and why the work that we set our students to do beyond the classroom develops their independent practice.
