Why study A-level Further Mathematics?

Just as languages provide the building blocks and rules we need to communicate, mathematics uses its own language, made up of numbers, symbols and formulas, to explore the rules we need to measure or identify essential problems like distance, speed, time, space, change, force and quantities.

Studying Mathematics helps us find patterns and structure in our lives. Practically, Mathematics helps us put a price on things, create graphics, build websites, build skyscrapers and generally understand how things work or predict how they might change over time and under different conditions.

Mathematics and Further Mathematics are versatile qualifications, well-respected by employers. Careers for men and women with good mathematics skills and qualifications are not only well paid, but they are also often interesting and rewarding. People who have studied mathematics are in the fortunate position of having an excellent choice of career.

Studying A-level Further Mathematics is likely to improve your grade in A-level Mathematics. The extra time, additional practice, further consolidation and development of techniques contribute to improved results in A-level Mathematics.

You cannot study Further Mathematics without also studying Mathematics.

What are the careers or further education that this course be suitable for?

Mathematics and Further Mathematics help support the study of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, IT, Economics, Business and Biology which can also help with your Mathematics revision. But studying Further Mathematics is essential if you want to study Mathematics or Engineering at university. It is also really useful if you intend to study a scientific engineering degree (e.g. Chemical Engineering).

Mathematics is essential for many career choices and will be a major help with others which include, Accountancy, Aerospace & Defence, Automotive, Biosciences, Business support services, Chemicals, Construction, Consultancies, Education, Engineering, Environment, Exploration Geophysics, Financial Services, Food & Drink, Government, Healthcare, Insurance, IT & Computing, Manufacturing, Media, Metals & Minerals, Operational Research, Pharmaceuticals, Recruitment, Academic Research, Science, Telecoms, Transport/Travel, Utilities

Course Details:

The single A-level Further Mathematics course consists of a mixture Pure and Applied elements. There are certain further pure mathematics topics that are compulsory. However, students must also study two out of a selection of additional further pure and applied topics (made up of Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Mathematics). The decision on which two topics will be made in conjunction with the class at an appropriate time during their studies.

The new A-level contains a problem solving element and students will be expected to apply the content they learn to harder more unfamiliar situations.

Edexcel Further Mathematics is a linear course with terminal examinations at the end of the course.

Subject Content:

Further Mathematics is taught through two main subject areas:

Further Pure Mathematics

Pure Core Mathematics 1 - Proof, series, complex numbers, argand diagrams, matrices, roots of polynomials linear transformations, vectors, volumes of revolution.
Pure Core Mathematics 2 - Complex numbers, series, methods in calculus, volumes of revolution, polar co-ordinates, hyperbolic functions, methods in differential equations, modelling with differential equations

Further Applied Mathematics

Further Pure Mathematics 1 – vectors, conic sections, inequalities, the t-formule, taylor series, methods in calculus, numerical methods, reductible differential equations.

Further Mechanics 1 – momentum and impulse, work energy and power, elastic strings and springs, elastic collisions

A-level – 2 Year Course

Students will complete the A-level mathematics qualification in Year 12 and the A-level further mathematics qualification in Year 13.

A-level further mathematics comprises of four papers, each 1½ hours long of equal weighting:

Paper 1: Core Pure mathematics 1

Paper 2: Core Pure mathematics 2

Paper 1 and Paper 2 may contain questions on various topics from the pure mathematics content.

Two further papers will be taken assessing the content of further mathematics. These are Further Pure 1 and Further Mechanics 1.
