Why study A-level Government and Politics?
We don’t always like politicians and the things that governments do, but the business of politics touches every aspect of our lives. And whilst we might criticise governments for some of their policies, it has to be better than having no government at all. Society just wouldn’t function without an elected body to decide, for example, what taxes will be levied, how those taxes will be spent on things like health and education or how the country will be defended. No matter whether government makes you feel angry or reassured, it is worth having a knowledge of how the whole process of an elected government works. Knowledge is power. The popular Government and Politics A-level gives you the knowledge to understand how government works, particularly in the UK, but also in other countries. If you want to work in local or national government and make a difference to society, this course is a valuable first step.
What are the careers or further education that this course be suitable for?
A qualification in government and politics is acknowledged as an academically rigorous qualification and is useful for a whole range of professions which require rational analytical thinking, the ability to argue and to make a case. The ability to comprehend, interpret and evaluate lots of information to reach practical solution and decisions is also developed. Many Government and Politics students go on to pursue careers in law, journalism as well as local and national government.Government and Politics courses can be followed in Higher Education. These may look at international relations, political philosophy as well as helping people work in local government and the civil service.

Course Details:
Edexcel Government and Politics is a linear course with examinations at the end of Year 13.Subject Content:
The course is split into three equal units
Component 1: UK Politics 1.Political participation: Democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media. 2. Core political ideas: What makes up conservatism, socialism and liberalism. |
Component 2: UK Government 1. UK Government: The constitution, Parliament, the Prime Minister and the executive, relations between the branches. 2. Political ideas: Students will study the key features of nationalism. |
Component 3: Comparative Politics 1. US Politics: Students will study the key features of the US Constitution, Congress, the presidency and the Supreme Court. As a comparative course there will be constant links between UK and US politics. |
Assessment details:
There will be three examinations lasting 2 hours each in Year 13. All examinations carry equal weight.
