How do we group students in the Formal Curriculum?

Each subject has its own grouping arrangements based on what works most effectively for learning in that subject. In most cases, this is mixed ability groups based around:

  • The form group in Year 7
  • Core groups in Years 8-9
  • Option pools in key stages 4-5

What are core groups?

Each year group is split into equally balanced A and B cohorts. Within each cohort mixed ability groups are created for teaching in Years 8-9.

Are there any exceptions to mixed ability grouping?

Maths and Core PE both group students into broadly banded tiers
