Studying Philosophy – Year 11 Transition Work

Context

Developing the habit of studying independently is essential if you are to achieve high standards in your A level studies. In year 12 Philosophy you will be set regular independent study which is relevant, challenging and extremely beneficial. To prepare you for this, you are expected to complete the following tasks in preparation for commencing the course this September.

Epistemology - Ms Howard

Print and read Chapter One from Bertrand Russell’s book ‘The Problems of Philosophy’ entitled ‘Appearance and Reality’ (see below for link).

Tasks

1. You are expected to conduct a ‘close reading of this text. This means you need to:

  • read it through the chapter once and look up any words/terms you are unfamiliar with and make a note of them in the margin
  • learn the meaning of all new vocabulary and be confident about accurately using it in the future
  • highlight all key words and information
  • take detailed notes on the chapter, summarising the main points, ideas and any conclusions
  • Read through the entire text again in preparation for the next task, taking note of the previously unfamiliar terms in their current context and the key ideas you have already highlighted.

2. Write at least 2 A4 sides in answer to the following question:

  • ‘Why, according to Russell, can we not be certain of the table’s existence?’
  • Keep your essay relevant to the question - Answer the Question - ATQ!!!
  • If quoting, keep quotes short – it’s better to summarise Russell’s arguments in your own words and then explain in order to demonstrate how well you have grasped the material.
  • Ensure you clearly outline Russell’s argument and explain how he reaches his conclusion
  • Make his conclusion clear and give reasons to justify it.
