SEPTEMBER ESSAY PLANNING

In September we will go over your Summer task and then you will be set the essay to write:

‘Britain was a great country at the beginning of the twentieth century.’ How far do you agree with this statement?

a) Look back over your notes - what is your judgment?

b) Now do a brief plan using one of the 2 structure suggestions below to help you.

Option 1:

  • An introduction– was Britain a great country to a large extent or to a small extent? Was it better or worse politically, socially or economically?
  • A paragraph about the positives of living in Britain (Britain was a great country because…)
  • A paragraph about the negatives of living in Britain (However, Britain was only a great country to a large/ small extent because…).
  • A concluding paragraph answering the question!

Option 2: Even better:

  • A stronger essay would be structured thematically:
    • Introduction
    • Political theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
    • Economic theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
    • Social theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
    • Conclusion
Aim to:
  • LInk back to the question at the beginning and end of paragraphs
  • Show how the different themes link together
