SEPTEMBER ESSAY PLANNING
In September we will go over your Summer task and then you will be set the essay to write:
‘Britain was a great country at the beginning of the twentieth century.’ How far do you agree with this statement?
a) Look back over your notes - what is your judgment?
b) Now do a brief plan using one of the 2 structure suggestions below to help you.
Option 1:
- An introduction– was Britain a great country to a large extent or to a small extent? Was it better or worse politically, socially or economically?
- A paragraph about the positives of living in Britain (Britain was a great country because…)
- A paragraph about the negatives of living in Britain (However, Britain was only a great country to a large/ small extent because…).
- A concluding paragraph answering the question!
Option 2: Even better:
- A stronger essay would be structured thematically:
- Introduction
- Political theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
- Economic theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
- Social theme - ways in which Britain was/ was not great
- Conclusion
- LInk back to the question at the beginning and end of paragraphs
