The Department for Education encourages all students to study the English Baccalaureate or as it’s more commonly known, the EBacc. This is a set of GCSE subjects that they believe best keeps young people’s options open for further study and future careers.
To meet the EBacc, a student must study GCSEs in the following areas:
- Mathematics
- English Language and English Literature
- Science – either Combined Science or Triple Science
- Geography or History
- A Language
They must also achieve at least a grade 4 (equivalent to a grade C) in each of these EBacc subjects.
In a competitive job market, meeting this standard can give a young person a necessary advantage over their peers. The EBacc is also made up of the subjects which the DfE believe are useful for many degrees, and is therefore highly valued by some universities for some of their courses.
For the reasons explained above, all of our students will study the core EBacc courses shown in the list below:
- GCSE Mathematics
- GCSE English Language
- GCSE English Literature
- GCSE Combined Science
We also require all of our student to study at least one of the additional EBacc courses shown in this second list:
- GCSE Triple Science +
- GCSE French
- GCSE German
- GCSE Spanish
- GCSE Computer Science
- GCSE Geography
- GCSE History
+ Please note, if a student opts for GCSE Triple Science, this will be instead of GCSE Combined Science.
