Do choose a subject because...
- You’ve done your research and you think it sounds interesting
- You’ve done your research and it fits with your future aspirations
- You’ve done your research and you think you’ll do well in it - the content sounds interesting and the style of learning and assessment suits you
- You enjoyed this subject or a similar subject at Key Stage 3 and did well in it - use your recent Assessment Certificate to guide you
- You’ve spoken to your teachers and they think you’ll do well in it.
Don't choose a subject just because...
- Your friends are doing it – this isn’t a good enough reason and you might not even end up in the same class!
- You like the teacher – at this stage, we can’t guarantee which teacher you’ll have
- Your parents want you to do it - but do listen carefully to what they’re saying, as I’m sure they’ll have some good advice!
- Without doing your research and not knowing very much about it
- Without speaking to your teachers and checking that they think you can do well in it
- Because it sounds “fun” - all Key Stage 4 courses require a level of hard work if you’re going to do well in them
Some other advice...
For students who are ‘spoilt for choice’ please remember that some courses can be picked up again at A-level.
For students who are not ‘spoilt for choice’ and struggling to choose 4 option subjects, please make the most of the opportunities on offer to research and discuss the different course choices available to you. Speak to your parents, Form Tutors and subjects teachers, and also your Head of House, Progress Lead or myself if you need any further guidance.
